The Westfield Police Department is saddened to learn of the recent passing of retired Captain Robert L. Compton on May 21, 2025 at the age of 68.
Captain Compton was a 1975 graduate of Westfield High School. He served as a Police Officer for the Plainfield Police Department from February 1979 until his appointment as a Police Officer with the Westfield Police Department on October 26, 1980.
Captain Compton was promoted to the rank of Sergeant of Police on July 7, 1986, designated a Detective Sergeant and assigned to the Detective Bureau on June 1, 1998, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant of Police on December 27, 1999, and promoted to the rank of Captain of Police on October 20, 2000. He retired on February 1, 2005, after completing 26 years of law enforcement service.
Captain Compton was the recipient of 2 Medals of Merit, 7 Command Citations, and 4 Certificates of Merit, as well as numerous letters of commendation from members of the public for excellent police service. At the time of his death, he was residing in Florida.
The Westfield Police Department extends its sincere condolences to the Compton family, especially his daughters Heidi Anne and Alexandra Theresa, and thanks him for his almost 25 years of honorable service to the Town of Westfield and Westfield Police Department.
