Lois R. Hopkins died of liver cancer in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Dec. 26, 2011. She was 86 years old. Lois R. Hopkins' funeral was held on Saturday, Jan. 14, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, N.C. She was born Ruth Lois Rees on July 22, 1925, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She was the oldest of three children born to Ruth Yourren Rees and Herbert Rees. Her sister, Shirley; her brother, Herbert, and her husband, John T. Hopkins Jr., passed away before Lois. In 1951, Lois married John T. Hopkins Jr. and moved to Westfield, N.J. Mr. Hopkins worked as a labor negotiator for management throughout his career. Mrs. Hopkins graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), summa cum laude, in 1972 and later received her master's in English there. Lois began teaching at Westfield High School, Westfield, N.J., in 1973. She taught with distinction there until 1991, when she retired. Beginning in 1991, Mrs. Hopkins lived an active life at Rossmoor Retirement Community near Jamesburg, N.J. In 2010, with failing health, she moved to Chapel Hill, N.C., to be closer to her son and his family. She is survived by her son, Jonathan, and his wife, Marian, and her grandson, Ian. Other living relatives include her niece, Christine Rees, and her two children, Kylie and Liam; and her nephew, Scott Rees, and his daughter, Morgan.
